If you read my blog frequently, it’ll come as no big surprise to learn that I’m a mad animal-lover with a side of environmentally guilt-ridden. I’ve created this little resource page to help those, vegan/vegetarian or not, who’re interested in animal welfare and the welfare of our quaint little carbon-based planet. You’re can help contribute to this page by sending me your favorite links and tips!

For more to browse, visit some of the vegan sites we’ve posted over on our Links page! To find out more about why KimmiKillZombie has adopted a Veg lifestyle, check out the FAQ page! I often post Vegan and animal tips, links, and tidbits on my tumblr and twitter pages, so check them out too! And finally, test out some of KimmiKillZombie’s original recipes!

Easy Ways I’ve Become More Eco-Conscious (And You Can Too!):

  • Are All of Those Clocks Necessary? after using our electric kettle, coffee maker, toaster oven or microwave, unplug them! It’s a super-easy way to conserve energy and lower your hydro bill! How many digital clocks do you need in your kitchen?
  • Forget the Screensaver! I always turn off my computer when it’s not in use. Sure, I don’t like waiting 60 seconds for it to boot up, but leaving your computer running all night is a drag. You’ll also find your computer’s performance will improve! Don’t forget to unplug your computers, laptops and printers when they’re sitting idle!
  • Save a Tree, Avoid a Chemical! Ditch the paper towels and instead make re-usable rags out of old ratty t-shirts for household cleaning! I also avoid harsh detergents and bleaches by using baking soda, vinegar and more to do my cleaning!
  • Hot Coffee, Cold Laundry- We always wash our clothing on the ‘Cold’ setting and always select ‘Economy’ as our load size. And we always wait until we have full loads! PERK: Using exclusively cold water, you can save around $63 a year! That’s enough to treat yourself with an extra cup o’ joe every week (providing you use your re-usable mug!)
  • Oh, It’s Your Birthday? Two years ago we came out to our parents. “Mom– Dad, We’re eco-nuts. And we don’t care who knows!” Reluctantly they came to accept our new lifestyle, and have given up on both receiving and giving of cards – whether for birthday’s anniversaries, or Christmas. Besides, who can afford the $5-6 pricetag per card in addition to a gift in this day and age? Hell, I got you the gift – enjoy the sentiment.
  • BONUS TIP: Take a page out of Crazy Ole Aunt Myrtle and snatch those bows back!
  • BONUSIER TIP: Always gift a Hemingway? Wrap books, coffee related items and rustic gifts in newspaper! If you have twine or hemp cord lying around, you can also top your super-cute, repurposed parcel with a bow!
  • Non-Smoking, Please! You don’t need to hear the babbling wrath of the non-smoker. But let me just spew this one little fact; not only will you be helping the planet, quitting can save you almost $1500 every year. Hello, vacation jar! Are you going to take a romantic getaway at a B&B in Niagara Falls, or a quiet round of Hill-Billy Golf in the hideaway mountains of Gatlinburg, Tennessee?

PEEVE: Don’t want to quit? Could you at least stop tossing your butt’s on the ground? I don’t care how small they are, you drop thousands in your lifetime as a smoker. And they’re garbage.

  • One Man’s Trash is Another Man’s.. Purging or cleaning house? If it works, if it’s wearable, if it’s cute and still loveable, ALWAYS donate to your local salvation army or goodwill! If your tossing out old furniture, tape a ‘FREE!’ sign on that bad boy!
  • Won’t Somebody Please Think of the Children Worms! We’re lucky that our Province (Oh, Canada!) has started a composting program we like to call Ye Olde Green Bin, where we can toss tissues, hairballs, banana peels, and the like to save them from the trash. If your locale hasn’t switched over to this nifty feature, consider starting up a compost in your back garden, and hounding emailing your Local Government Official to start up a program!

How You Can Support Animals Without Being Vegan/Vegetarian:

  • Become a Conscious Consumer. No, I’m not telling you to run out and watch those horrible animal-slaughter videos. Here are some easy ways:
  • Contact your local government office regarding animal rights laws and factory restrictions in your area, to be sure animals artreated as humanely as possible, and that your elected officials know that people are concerned.
  • Say no to factory-farmed meat, and avoid purchasing meat and dairy from major fast-food and grocery chains.
  • Buy your meat and dairy products free-range.
  • Support the World Wildlife Organization.
  • Adopt, Sponsor and Support animals through Farm Sanctuary.
  • Never buy pets from a pet shop. Most source their animals from breeders and puppy mills, who unnecessarily train ‘pure’ breeds for profit when there are plenty of strays to wuv.  Always adopt from your local Humane Society or through the Classifieds! Also: Spay and Neuter!
  • Adopt a Fur and Leather Free Wardrobe
