TUTORIAL: Easy, Non-Damaging Heat-Free Curls!

As a little girl, many-a Sunday night was spent rolling foam curlers into my both my sister’s and my hair before school on Sunday. After hunting countless dollar stores over the years, I’ve yet to find the curlers that my sister and I coveted so much in our childhood. And with naturally straight hair, i find curls created from an iron fall limp and flat within hours.

So that’s why when I happened around this new tutorial, I was able to achieve flowing, natural curls overnight without heat, or even countless hours rolling 50 foam clips into my hair. All I needed was a little water, and a couple pairs of socks.

ASK KKZ: Makeup and Style Inspiration for A Sharp, Short ‘Do.

Hey, I’d like to see some make up ideas to go with a short cut (Short as in Jean Seberg short) but in a harder edge. I have a very hard time finding make up and clothing ideas to accompany my hair. Thanks a lot!

Thanks for your message, Ashley! I’d be happy to help you out with some tips for makeup and style ideas to go with your super-short hairstyle. One of the main keys of styling a short look is to play up the androgyny while still adding very feminine touches. A lot of cropped-cuts are paired with a few tell-tale keys of femininity; alabaster skin, pearls, and silky, sheer fabric.

Here are some tips:

COSTUME TUTORIAL: Marie Antoinette Made Easy

Since I was just a tween playing the Nancy Drew Game, and again with the release of Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette staring Kirsten Dunst (above), I’ve had quite the crush on the romantic and tragic tale of Marie Antoinette. And with such a story and elaborate dress of the time, it’s no wonder why it’s one of the most popular Halloween costumes year after year!

And I’ve found a video tutorial so you may easily execute the hair and make-up to complete your costume! Best of all, the hair tutorial completely removes the need for a starchy, squashed and scratchy wig!

ASK KKZ: Unnatural Hair for Medium Skintones

I want to dye my hair an unnatural color but I’m Hispanic so I don’t know what color would look good with my skin tone which is honey-colored. I also want to avoid looking like some scene kid. Help, please? - Submitted by Fabiola

One thing I must first say about dyeing your hair an unnatural shade; they tend to clash with ALL skintones, not just darker ones. The reason why us pale chicks are able to make royal blue and pure tones a little less garish is because there isn’t a lot of heavy yellow or pink undertones in paler skin.

But even us pale gals have those undertones. It does make it harder for those with deeper honey, olive, or peach and red undertones to rock a pure hue in their locks though.

As for making you look ‘too scene’ there are plenty of ways to add a little unnatural to your mane without overkill. I would avoid under-cut dyes (dyeing the underside of your head unnatural), chunky streaks, and shaving any part of your head.  For subtlety, you can always dip-dye the tips, or add wispy streaks of color to the under-layers of your hair. And Finally, you can pull off a full-head unnatural hue if you pick a muted color, and/or avoid any heavy, wild make-up applications.

All that being said, here are some of my hue ideas, that won’t clash as much with darker skin:

There are several ways to achieve beautiful pastel hued hair. I’ll list them so you can choose the method that best suits you / the shade you’re after.

1. Pick a Pastel Dye, that Needs no Altering.

A few shades are already available in Pastel shades. Special Effects’ ‘Cupcake Pink’ is a beautiful light pink. The Directions brand also has a few pastel shades.

ASK KKZ: Faded Ginger.

Just thought I’d tell you first that Stumbleupon brought me to your website and I adore it thus far! Haven’t left it for days since!! I also have a question that I hope to hell you can answer because no one can!

I’m a natural dark brunette. I’m bored of black, brown, and red… I’m currently dyed SUPER red, and its faded and rooty and gross. I would like to go blonde! But I can’t strip the colour out nor do I know how to even BEGIN going blonde! I don’t have the patience for streaks or the money for a hair salon to strip the colour. If you have suggestions you are my hero!

PS- I’ve suggested this website to thousands of friends who love it too!! Youve def inspired some epic hair colour adventures (I’ma try my some dye die colour hair dip!) – Submitted by Krissy.

Ask KKZ: Rainbow Brows for Rainbow Hair

I have really light eyebrows but I dye my hair a bright red color. So here is my question… What kind of products, brands, colors, etc. can someone use on their eyebrows to match their hair. What if someone had a wild hair color like green? - Submitted by RED.

I don’t do it much anymore, but back when I had purple hair, I used to color my eyebrows purple every day. I wasn’t lucky enough to be born with two awesome arches, so I spend a lot of my time faking sculpting them in.

Though I stick mostly to ash brown and softer colors now, the technique is still the same. So if you’re used to filling in your brows, there isn’t much change to the technique, just the color.

There are several ways at which you can achieve your oddly colored brows, so I’ll list them for you. I’d try out them all until you find what works for you, is easiest and quickest to achieve.
