A Plea For Transparency from a Vegan Make-Up Artist

Recently, I’ve been getting back into Make-Up artistry. Being a vegan, I am having a very difficult time.

It has been awhile since I’ve offered my services professionally, and my beliefs and eating habits have changed dramatically. I went from being an occasional meat-avoider to full-blown vegan in the time between. And now, trying to flesh out my make-up artistry kit, while still holding onto my beliefs, I find myself running into a brick wall.

With so many ‘cruelty-free’ pledges, and ingredients lists half-a-page long, a girl can get overwhelmed. Major cosmetics companies come up with ‘nothing found’ when searching for animal ingredient free products, yet if you have a qualm about animal testing, you just have to scroll to the bottom of the page.

HEY MAJOR COSMETIC BRANDS – Veganism is a growing trend. And with the internet, the number of conscious consumers is ever-growing. is it so hard to have a section, a stamp, or at least a list of vegan-friendly cosmetics in your FAQ? I would very much like to give you my money, and share your cruelty-free products with my clients.

 - BUT -

Though most major cosmetic companies website’s have no whisper of veganism, there are a few who’ve got it right. Here is a small list of cosmetics companies who are either entirely vegan, or have clearly posted vegan items!

WATCH THIS: Earthlings — The ‘Vegan’ Maker

I love documentaries. It doesn’t really matter the subject matter, I’ll watch it. A little while back, I saw a post on Vegansaurus with a link to Earthlings, narrated by Joaquin Phoenix, a well known vegan. I’m not big on scare tactics, and though this entire movie is pretty graphic, horrific, and un-settling, I figured I would share it, as it’s moving and very well made.

If you’ve been interested in Veganism for some time and are looking for something to persuade you, look no further. If you’re vegan and losing motivation, look no further. If you’re looking for material to share with your friends and family to shut them up about your eating habits, look no further.

Interested? You can stream it online for free via the Earthlings website.

P.S – I’m not kidding about the graphic part. At one point I had to pause the movie and walk away to cry and hug my cat before I could even finish. It’s really jarring, Don’t say I didn’t warn your little, empathetic heart.

The Teal Cat Project; Get a Cat, Save a Cat!

Check out the Teal Cat Project! Started by Vegan Guru Isa Chandra Moskowitz and Denis Miller, the Teal Cat Project finds and accepts donations of thrift-store cat sculpture’s and re-purpose them into teal works of art. Supporters can then buy these teal kitties to support homeless kitties in different locations each campaign!

Each cat costs $25, and 100% of the proceeds are donated directly to a kitty rescue program. Learn more about the current program, The NYC Feral Cat Initiative!

Rehabilitated Baby Seal Does Cute Things; World Smiles.

It’s Friday so I’m going to take it easy on you. No crazy How To Look Awesome posts, no delicious recipes. But I couldn’t leave you with nothing. So I brought you the latest viral video to hit the web.

No, it isn’t a guy tripping out over nature in the wilderness. No, it isn’t a kid embarrassing himself in-front of a web-cam in his bedroom. and No, it isn’t that song Friday. That is so 6 Fridays ago.

It’s a cute baby seal. Doing cute baby seal things. Like being freed back into the ocean. :3

Enjoy!

Here’s some information about this rescue and others from IWNCC Founder, Jeff Lederman;

Island Wildlife Natural Care Centre on Salt Spring Island, BC has nursed ‘Peewee’, a starving Northern Fur Seal back to health. Watch while this adorable pup makes her joyful dash to freedom on BC’s west coast to join hundreds of others as they journey between Alaska and California. We guarantee you’ll lose your heart to her.

Our non-profit org. saves the lives of hundreds of ‘Peewee’s’ every year. Now it’s easy for you to help make sure they all get their chance to go home again. A generous sponsor will match every dollar donated during our 2011 campaign.

Find our more about the work we do, along with our CanadaHelps / PayPal donate button at www.sealrescue.org and facebook.com/sealrescue.

Ke$ha Teams Up With PETA in Campaign – “Canada’s Club Scene Sucks”

Ke$ha and Iggy Pop have recntly joined ranks with PETA for the launch of a new global campaign against the clubbing of baby seals.  The annual season of the seal hunt is upon us, and PETA hopes to hinder the ability to sell the pelts internationally.

In a statement, Ke$ha said:

“I was lucky enough to get to watch a bunch of wild seals recently and truly fell in love with these amazing creatures. Canada gets to be host to harp seals each year during their migration to the ice to give birth which is beautiful and peaceful. But because the babies’ fur is so soft, there are people who club and brutally kill these young animals. The Canadian seal slaughter is barbaric and archaic. My music and my fans are part of a movement of youth taking over the world with positive change. I know they’ll help me and PETA ban the Canadian seal slaughter so the only place you see baby seal fur is in a museum.”

As a (typically) proud Canadian, I have always been a protester of the seal clubbing campaign (When I was little I tried to get my mom to get me a baby harp seal as a pet. I totally thought it could live in my swimming pool. True story.)
