A Plea For Transparency from a Vegan Make-Up Artist

Recently, I’ve been getting back into Make-Up artistry. Being a vegan, I am having a very difficult time.

It has been awhile since I’ve offered my services professionally, and my beliefs and eating habits have changed dramatically. I went from being an occasional meat-avoider to full-blown vegan in the time between. And now, trying to flesh out my make-up artistry kit, while still holding onto my beliefs, I find myself running into a brick wall.

With so many ‘cruelty-free’ pledges, and ingredients lists half-a-page long, a girl can get overwhelmed. Major cosmetics companies come up with ‘nothing found’ when searching for animal ingredient free products, yet if you have a qualm about animal testing, you just have to scroll to the bottom of the page.

HEY MAJOR COSMETIC BRANDS – Veganism is a growing trend. And with the internet, the number of conscious consumers is ever-growing. is it so hard to have a section, a stamp, or at least a list of vegan-friendly cosmetics in your FAQ? I would very much like to give you my money, and share your cruelty-free products with my clients.

 - BUT -

Though most major cosmetic companies website’s have no whisper of veganism, there are a few who’ve got it right. Here is a small list of cosmetics companies who are either entirely vegan, or have clearly posted vegan items!

STEAL THE STYLE: Ke$ha’s Blue Lipstick

You may have heard of Ke$ha. Whether it’s getting flak for showing up to the Grammy’s in a garbage bag, or sporting pyramid stud eyebrows, Ke$ha knows how to draw attention. She blew up with her first single, Tik Tok — which was played and remixed to death by local clubs and radio stations, to the point where the world wondered, ‘Is anyone actually a fan of Ke$ha?’

In Nailpolish Lurve…

I was hoping to keep up on blogging. This past weekend was a relaxing one. Me and the boyfriend spent most of it driving around with no real plans, other than to pick up groceries. We decided to buy some terracotta pots to create our own indoor herb garden, so we spent most of Sunday painting them (I was hoping to upload photos today to share, but I didn’t have time, I’ll try my best tomorrow).  We also hung out at the local Lick’s Diner, and I had the greatest nature-burger ever.  But enough about my weekend…

I never really used to be a fan of nail polish. I mean, I was when I was a kid – I would use big chunky hollographic glitters, and alternating orange and black or green and red for holidays – but once I got older, I never got past the goopy-ness and sloppyness of all of the dollar-store brands I used to wear.

The truth is, I still don’t have the hang of it. But, I’ve become addicted to the amazing new colors and consistencies coming out in nailpolish today. we now have creams, and mattes, and glosses- crackles, and pearls, and hollographic.

This weekend me and the boy headed out to check out some apartments. We also stopped at the local drug store because I saw a flyer with a bunch o’ sales.

I picked up quite a few new products to test out, I hope to review some of them later this week.

Base Face: KimmiKZ’s Daily Base Make-Up (Foundation, Concealer…)

I often get asked from readers what products I use to create what I call my ‘base face’. I figured doing a ‘Beauty Buy’ rather than a billion ask KKZ’s would be easier, and let you get a peak inside my make-up bag. Often in tutorials I say to start with your ‘Base Face’ which is basically a pre-primed and moisturized face that have your foundation, concealer and skin prepped for you to begin doing eyes, lips, blusher, etc.

The Plunge: KimmiKZ’s Favorite Bathtime Products.

1. Palmer’s Cocoa Butter

First off, even if this butter sucked I would still use it because it smells like a vanilla cupcake. But this is absolutely the best cream I have ever used. It’s perfect if you have scars, stretch marks, or blemishes that need healin’. It’s also got a slight yellow tint, so not only does it fade scars over time, but you get a nice instant veil. I have some large scars, and I actually like to put this over the rosacea on my cheaks right after getting out of the bath.
