ASK KKZ: Faded Ginger.

Just thought I’d tell you first that Stumbleupon brought me to your website and I adore it thus far! Haven’t left it for days since!! I also have a question that I hope to hell you can answer because no one can!

I’m a natural dark brunette. I’m bored of black, brown, and red… I’m currently dyed SUPER red, and its faded and rooty and gross. I would like to go blonde! But I can’t strip the colour out nor do I know how to even BEGIN going blonde! I don’t have the patience for streaks or the money for a hair salon to strip the colour. If you have suggestions you are my hero!

PS- I’ve suggested this website to thousands of friends who love it too!! Youve def inspired some epic hair colour adventures (I’ma try my some dye die colour hair dip!) – Submitted by Krissy.

Ask KKZ: Rainbow Brows for Rainbow Hair

I have really light eyebrows but I dye my hair a bright red color. So here is my question… What kind of products, brands, colors, etc. can someone use on their eyebrows to match their hair. What if someone had a wild hair color like green? - Submitted by RED.

I don’t do it much anymore, but back when I had purple hair, I used to color my eyebrows purple every day. I wasn’t lucky enough to be born with two awesome arches, so I spend a lot of my time faking sculpting them in.

Though I stick mostly to ash brown and softer colors now, the technique is still the same. So if you’re used to filling in your brows, there isn’t much change to the technique, just the color.

There are several ways at which you can achieve your oddly colored brows, so I’ll list them for you. I’d try out them all until you find what works for you, is easiest and quickest to achieve.

Ask KKZ: How to Be A Weirdo in the Workplace.

I’ve been dying my hair every color under the sun since I was 14, the only problem now is that I have obtained a job that will fire me if my hair isn’t “natural looking” — so I thought,’time for a new job’ – but unfortunately potential employers don’t appreciate my magenta roots as much as I do. I don’t want to have to change to conventional normal, but I have to pay my bills! How do you balance your love of color and crazy with color-hate in the workplace? - Submitted by SK

Great question! Unfortunately, it doesn’t come with an easy answer. Usually I just recommend picking up some clip-in extensions and keeping them on you for ‘too normal’ emergencies, but there is something unsatisfactory about clipping in your cool all the time.  This is especially since the first question out of a strangers mouth when commenting on your hair is usually, ‘Is that YOUR hair?” And it would suck as a dye-hard to have to keep saying ‘no’ all the time.

And I’m going to go out on a limb and say you probably aren’t lucky enough to have a boss who’s color blind, so I’ll give you my advice. Push boundaries. [Read more...]

Ask KKZ [Combining Box Hair Dyes, Can it Be Done?]

Can you mix 2 different color boxed hair dye together? ex: reddish auburn and brown black?? - Submitted by Laura.

Well Laura, I’m going to give you a cop-out answer here. Yes, you very well could. Would I recommend it? No.

This ‘No‘ is especially true if you’ll be mixing different brands. According to the U.S Drug Administration, mixing hair dye products can harm your skin and hair. You’ll also run the risk of mixing unlike chemicals which could cause a bad reaction; and worst case scenario — we’re talking burns and even possible hair loss.

Now, if you are using two similar colors from the same line (brand) of dyes, your likely to not encounter any crazy chemical reactions, as brands stick to the same formula throughout their line. But you should keep in mind –  different colors require different ingredients. Like blonde will contain peroxide. You mix a red dye with a bleach blonde dye and you’ll probably end up like a patchy carrot. This would happen because red is a pigment trying to enter the follicles, and blonde is trying to lift the pigment already present.

Ask KKZ: Omni Family, Veggie Kid. How To Make the Leap to Living Veggie in a Meat-Eaters World!

Hi Kimmi. I’m 19, and have been living on Residence at my school. I’m packing up to get ready to head back to my parent’s for the Summer, and I’m a little worried about coming out to them as a new Vegetarian, especially since it’s barbeque season and they’re HUGE carnivores.

I’ve been only trying to go Veggie for the past couple months, but it has been really hard on a meal plan. I do have to bend sometimes, but having the opportunity of a full kitchen for the Summer – I want to stand firm with my family and have a 100% Meat-Free Summer.

Even though I haven’t been Veggie for long, it’s been something I’ve thought about for a long time.  Now that I’m trying though, I find myself a overwhelmed. I find myself just omitting things at the Caf, eating burger buns without the patty, just a salad,  eating ALOT of spaghetti and french fries. I want to go Vegan someday soon, but I’m worried if i can’t get my vegetarian diet a little more stable, I won’t be able to do it. Also, if you have any tips for dealing with my parents this Summer, that would be great! lol. I’ve read and bookmarked all your recipes, I can’t wait to try some of them out! - Submitted by Kara.

Ask KKZ [Teasing Hair How To; How To Backcomb]

Hey Kimmi! I need some tips and help with backcombing. Whenever I try to tease my hair, it looks really messy and frizzy. It also falls out after like 10 minutes. What am I doing wrong? My hair’s on the thinner side, so I’m starting to think it just might not be thick enough to hold a tease. Submitted by Summer

Don’t fret Summer! Backcombing can be tricky to master, especially when working with thin hair. Backcombing, teasing, or filling hair, is an essential tool to creating styles, it helps create to create shape and lift, while making hair easier to work with in general.

In addition to being a tool to create glamorous up-dos, and voluminous retro styles, it’s also used solely to make hair BIG.

Assuming you aren’t trying to create the gigantic, layered poufs common to the Emo subculture, standard backcombing is a great styling tool to master. Here are my some tips to mastering the backcomb..

Ask KKZ [Purple Shampoo, Temporary Hair Dye and Staining, Makeup Brushes for a Beginner]

I was told that “purple shampoo” is good for lightening your hair and its better than bleach, I was wondering if that was true. Submitted by Alex

Purple Shampoo is a great product when used alongside bleach. Purple shampoo acts as a toner to reduce the brassiness and yellow tones of chemically lightened hair. It comes in shampoo form, rather than a one-use toner to help prevent your lightened hair from dulling out over-time.  This can in-turn look like it is indeed lightening your hair, but it isn’t.

I want to dye some bright streaks into my natural hair, which is a light golden brown. I want to use a temporary dye in pink or blue, but will it affect my color once it washes out? Submitted by Amber.

Ask KKZ [Red Hair Dye, and Using Eyeliner and Small Eyes]

http://kimmikillzombie.killer-cosmetics.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/askkkzbbc.pngHey I was wondering if you had any tips for making red hair dye last longer? I use Special Effects in Nuclear Red. Thanks! Submitted by Lesley.

Nuclear Red is such an awesome shade! One of the biggest problem-factors with having such a sweet shade of red though is, that – red tends to be the quickest fading of all of the not-found-in-nature hair colors.

But, even though you’ve picked a high maintenance shade, there are still several tips and tricks to keep it from fading out on you.

I wrote a pretty extensive blog a few months back on how to dye it with fading in mind, and how to maintain the color.

Ask KKZ [Run-away Eyeliner, Wig Re-shaping]

http://kimmikillzombie.killer-cosmetics.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/askkkzbbcd.pngHow can i keep my eyeliner from running down my face? Submitted by Jess.

I’m going to assume that you mean typical everyday wear, and that there is no underlying skin condition or a whole lot of crying gumming up your make-up.

The main cause for eyeliner to run is natural skin oils. So you can now attribute your end-of-the-shift raccoon eyes, on the oil your pores seep throughout the day. Or sweat; makeup’s jealous cousin.

Because I have no idea what brand or type of liner you typically use, the problem may be as simple as switching brands, or trying a new type.

Liners that last are typically liquid, gel, or cream. But- these liners do have their downfall. If they get wet, many of them run down the face faster than the typical pencil. And these types of liners have a harder time creating that perfect smudge-look a pencil can create. Your best bet is to try out different brands and types of liners until you find your perfect match.

If it isn’t switching types doesn’t help, then we have a few other tips that might prevent raccoon eyes:
