ASK KKZ: How to Banish Dandruff

I have dandruff, do you know of any home remedies to cure it? Head and Shoulders doesn’t work. :(

- Submitted by Samantha.

Though dandruff is an embarrassing nuisance, it’s really nothing to be ashamed of. Dandruff affects as many as 40% of teenagers and adults, which makes it a pretty common ailment.

Dandruff occurs when dead skins cells shed too rapidly, which then clumps together and produces that visible, flaky white dandruff. The shedding of these cells is a normal process, which everyone’s scalp goes through. But several factors can put our skin on overdrive, and preventing this is what will stop the flaking.

So here are some of my tips…

ASK KKZ: Hair-Dye Help!

I’d like to recreate the hair-dye style in this picture. How can I get this look??- Submitted by Trish

This style works best on layered hair. If you intend on using a semi-permanent dye like Manic Panic to achieve the Auburn shade in the picture, you’ll firstly want to bleach all of your hair. Then, separate your hair into two sections; using a tail comb, part a round section, all the way around the crown. Tightly secure the top section into a bun. Apply vaseline around the part of your top section to avoid bleeding into the bleach. This step is crucial, as the dye if applied to the top section, will stain immediately. Apply your dye to the bottom section, and wrap in tinfoil or plastic wrap and wait. Have a friend carefully help you to wash out your bottom section, without getting the top section  wet at all. This can be achieved by resting the back of your head on the tub, and your friend leaning over you. Immediately shampoo the bottom section to remove excess stain.

ASK KKZ: Unnatural Hair for Medium Skintones

I want to dye my hair an unnatural color but I’m Hispanic so I don’t know what color would look good with my skin tone which is honey-colored. I also want to avoid looking like some scene kid. Help, please? - Submitted by Fabiola

One thing I must first say about dyeing your hair an unnatural shade; they tend to clash with ALL skintones, not just darker ones. The reason why us pale chicks are able to make royal blue and pure tones a little less garish is because there isn’t a lot of heavy yellow or pink undertones in paler skin.

But even us pale gals have those undertones. It does make it harder for those with deeper honey, olive, or peach and red undertones to rock a pure hue in their locks though.

As for making you look ‘too scene’ there are plenty of ways to add a little unnatural to your mane without overkill. I would avoid under-cut dyes (dyeing the underside of your head unnatural), chunky streaks, and shaving any part of your head.  For subtlety, you can always dip-dye the tips, or add wispy streaks of color to the under-layers of your hair. And Finally, you can pull off a full-head unnatural hue if you pick a muted color, and/or avoid any heavy, wild make-up applications.

All that being said, here are some of my hue ideas, that won’t clash as much with darker skin:

ASK KKZ: Faded Ginger.

Just thought I’d tell you first that Stumbleupon brought me to your website and I adore it thus far! Haven’t left it for days since!! I also have a question that I hope to hell you can answer because no one can!

I’m a natural dark brunette. I’m bored of black, brown, and red… I’m currently dyed SUPER red, and its faded and rooty and gross. I would like to go blonde! But I can’t strip the colour out nor do I know how to even BEGIN going blonde! I don’t have the patience for streaks or the money for a hair salon to strip the colour. If you have suggestions you are my hero!

PS- I’ve suggested this website to thousands of friends who love it too!! Youve def inspired some epic hair colour adventures (I’ma try my some dye die colour hair dip!) – Submitted by Krissy.

Ask KKZ: Rainbow Brows for Rainbow Hair

I have really light eyebrows but I dye my hair a bright red color. So here is my question… What kind of products, brands, colors, etc. can someone use on their eyebrows to match their hair. What if someone had a wild hair color like green? - Submitted by RED.

I don’t do it much anymore, but back when I had purple hair, I used to color my eyebrows purple every day. I wasn’t lucky enough to be born with two awesome arches, so I spend a lot of my time faking sculpting them in.

Though I stick mostly to ash brown and softer colors now, the technique is still the same. So if you’re used to filling in your brows, there isn’t much change to the technique, just the color.

There are several ways at which you can achieve your oddly colored brows, so I’ll list them for you. I’d try out them all until you find what works for you, is easiest and quickest to achieve.

Ask KKZ: How to Be A Weirdo in the Workplace.

I’ve been dying my hair every color under the sun since I was 14, the only problem now is that I have obtained a job that will fire me if my hair isn’t “natural looking” — so I thought,’time for a new job’ – but unfortunately potential employers don’t appreciate my magenta roots as much as I do. I don’t want to have to change to conventional normal, but I have to pay my bills! How do you balance your love of color and crazy with color-hate in the workplace? - Submitted by SK

Great question! Unfortunately, it doesn’t come with an easy answer. Usually I just recommend picking up some clip-in extensions and keeping them on you for ‘too normal’ emergencies, but there is something unsatisfactory about clipping in your cool all the time.  This is especially since the first question out of a strangers mouth when commenting on your hair is usually, ‘Is that YOUR hair?” And it would suck as a dye-hard to have to keep saying ‘no’ all the time.

And I’m going to go out on a limb and say you probably aren’t lucky enough to have a boss who’s color blind, so I’ll give you my advice. Push boundaries. [Read more...]

Ask KKZ [Combining Box Hair Dyes, Can it Be Done?]

Can you mix 2 different color boxed hair dye together? ex: reddish auburn and brown black?? - Submitted by Laura.

Well Laura, I’m going to give you a cop-out answer here. Yes, you very well could. Would I recommend it? No.

This ‘No‘ is especially true if you’ll be mixing different brands. According to the U.S Drug Administration, mixing hair dye products can harm your skin and hair. You’ll also run the risk of mixing unlike chemicals which could cause a bad reaction; and worst case scenario — we’re talking burns and even possible hair loss.

Now, if you are using two similar colors from the same line (brand) of dyes, your likely to not encounter any crazy chemical reactions, as brands stick to the same formula throughout their line. But you should keep in mind –  different colors require different ingredients. Like blonde will contain peroxide. You mix a red dye with a bleach blonde dye and you’ll probably end up like a patchy carrot. This would happen because red is a pigment trying to enter the follicles, and blonde is trying to lift the pigment already present.

Ask KKZ: Omni Family, Veggie Kid. How To Make the Leap to Living Veggie in a Meat-Eaters World!

Hi Kimmi. I’m 19, and have been living on Residence at my school. I’m packing up to get ready to head back to my parent’s for the Summer, and I’m a little worried about coming out to them as a new Vegetarian, especially since it’s barbeque season and they’re HUGE carnivores.

I’ve been only trying to go Veggie for the past couple months, but it has been really hard on a meal plan. I do have to bend sometimes, but having the opportunity of a full kitchen for the Summer – I want to stand firm with my family and have a 100% Meat-Free Summer.

Even though I haven’t been Veggie for long, it’s been something I’ve thought about for a long time.  Now that I’m trying though, I find myself a overwhelmed. I find myself just omitting things at the Caf, eating burger buns without the patty, just a salad,  eating ALOT of spaghetti and french fries. I want to go Vegan someday soon, but I’m worried if i can’t get my vegetarian diet a little more stable, I won’t be able to do it. Also, if you have any tips for dealing with my parents this Summer, that would be great! lol. I’ve read and bookmarked all your recipes, I can’t wait to try some of them out! - Submitted by Kara.
